Profile
A software engineer with over 15 years experience in the IT industry.
The majority of this experience has been gained in technical software
development using a variety of operating systems and languages.
A range of project responsibilities has led to the development of
strong communication and interpersonal skills and strong technical ability.
I have significant experience of all aspects of the development process
including; initial requirements specification, program design, coding, testing,
porting and installation, using ISO 9001 accredited practices.
At the start of 2007 after being made redundant, I decided to take a
years sabbatical to spend time with my newborn son. I also built my own
campervan and took my family on an extensive tour of Europe for a number of
months during the summer.

Employment
April 2006 – Jan 2007: Senior Software Engineer,
Brainware Inc.
This was a fulltime position developing knowledge management based solutions.
I designed and developed a scalable document indexing and search tool in C++, STL, and COM utilising Brainware Neural Network based search technologies. This used Microsoft Ifilters to capture content and properties from a number of file formats and relational databases including Oracle and SQL Server. The repository could be rapidly searched using natural language queries through an ASP front end bolted onto a COM interface. It utilised XML as a medium to pass large quantities of data from a number of load balanced servers.
My other responsibilities included correcting bugs and small developments mainly in Brainwares Invoice Capture Software. This involved liasing with a development team based in Germany and using remote access to their Source Safe repository. The front end was written in VB6 and the logic was built in C++ COM components. I also performed some quality testing prior to a new release.
April 2002 - March 2006:
Software Consulatant, SER Solutions Inc.
My responsibilities
included enhancing and extending the company’s 2 eDM products.
With eDM-Web this
involved using a Java server (developed in Microsoft Visual J++) with business
logic contained in COM components. This would handle requests from client
Internet Explorer browsers, retrieve and update details from Oracle / SQL
Server databases via ODBC SQL, and process the results into DHTML streamed back
to the client. Windows eDM makes use of
proprietary languages to provide a similar service for desktops on a LAN. Various supporting applications, such as
configuration, upload, and database maintenance tools were also written in C#,
Visual Basic 6, and ASP.
Other responsibilities included recording and correcting bugs in these systems, providing third-line support for customer issues, and producing specifications and updating documentation to reflect the changes in functionality (a mixture of Microsoft Office and HTML based documentation). Consultancy on integration of eDM-Web into a customer’s website was also provided. This work was often done independently, but teamwork was used for larger developments.
I worked on the development of a .NET API to allow customers to integrate their business systems with eDM. This was written in C# and utilised XML and Component Services to manage resources, security and transactions. There was also a web service interface so our customers could integrate the eDM technology globally.
I worked on the design and development of a Windows interface version of an extensive hybrid/raster CAD system written primarily in ADA but with legacy C and FORTRAN utilities. The primary objectives were production of an interface with Windows ‘feel’ and ease of central configuration constrained by minimal modification to the existing righting software. The interface was built using MFC framework following the MDI template.
This Windows version formed a core part of SER System UK’s largest ever order to the Environment agency.
August 1992 – Feb 1998: Software Engineer, PAFEC CAE Ltd
I developed and maintained PAFEC’s engineering application on Windows platforms.
July 1990 – August 1992: Porting Engineer, PAFEC CAE Ltd
I ported PAFEC’s engineering applications from Unix to Windows which involved developing many machine dependant utilities.
November 1989 – July 1990: Programmer, Datafield
Computers Ltd
I developed stock control systems in Dbase.
